Judge skeptical of economic espionage charges in ex-Google engineer’s AI secrets case
A federal judge questioned whether a former Google engineer, Linwei Ding, should have part of his conviction for stealing AI trade secrets tossed due to insufficient evidence of intent to benefit China. Judge Chhabria doubted a jury could find Ding possessed that intent during his 2022-2023 file uploads, based on later actions. Ding was convicted on all 14 counts in January. Sentencing is set for August 4, with the judge considering motions for acquittal or a new trial.
