US military reportedly used Claude in Iran strikes despite Trump’s ban | AI (artificial intelligence)
The US military reportedly used Anthropic’s AI model, Claude, to assist in planning and executing the joint US-Israel attack on Iran that began Saturday. This occurred despite former President Donald Trump’s order, issued hours earlier, for all federal agencies to sever ties with the “Radical Left AI company.” The incident highlights the operational challenges of rapidly removing deeply integrated AI tools. The rift stems from the military’s earlier use of Claude in a Venezuela operation, which violated Anthropic’s terms against violent applications. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth condemned Anthropic but acknowledged a six-month transition period is needed. Meanwhile, OpenAI has reportedly agreed to provide its AI tools to the Pentagon.
