The next chapter of the Microsoft–OpenAI partnership – OpenAI
Microsoft and OpenAI are restructuring their partnership. Under a new multi-billion dollar agreement, Microsoft will no longer cap OpenAI’s compute access but will also stop sharing a percentage of OpenAI’s revenue. Instead, Microsoft gains a “right of first refusal” if OpenAI seeks additional cloud capacity. The deal ends exclusivity clauses, allowing OpenAI to partner with other cloud providers, while Microsoft retains rights to OpenAI’s intellectual property for products like Copilot. This shift marks a loosening of their once-exclusive alliance.
