US supreme court ‘demolishes’ key Voting Rights Act provision that prevented racial discrimination | US supreme court
The US Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that Louisiana must redraw its congressional map, effectively gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The conservative majority found that using race to ensure fair representation for Black voters constituted an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. Justice Alito wrote that race cannot play a role in redistricting, while Justice Kagan dissented, calling it a “demolition” of the Voting Rights Act. The case stemmed from a challenge to Louisiana’s second majority-Black district, which was created after a previous map was found to dilute Black voting power.
