Does the Google Pixel’s best background feature really need its own app?

Google may be moving its Pixel phones’ “Now Playing” feature from a hidden system setting into its own dedicated app, according to a teardown. This would let users find it easily in their app drawer and could allow for long-requested features like transferring your music history when you upgrade phones. Currently, the feature works silently in the background, identifying songs on your lock screen. While an app could offer more control and compete with Apple’s Shazam, some users hope it retains its simple, unobtrusive feel.
