Publishers wait for Google, now California may be walking away

A 2024 deal between California and Google promised $175 million over five years to support local journalism. However, Governor Newsom’s latest budget proposal includes no future funding, cutting the first year to just $10 million from the state. Google will match only that reduced amount, and none of the $20 million has been distributed yet. Critics argue the voluntary deal has failed, leaving local news outlets—which have seen drastic closures and job losses—without the stable support that mandatory payment laws in countries like Canada and Australia have provided. The future of the promised funding is now in serious doubt.
