A new gig work sector has emerged in the US, with people being paid around $22 to manually close the doors of Waymo’s self-driving taxis. This unexpected manual labour, sourced via apps like Honk, fulfills tasks the autonomous vehicles cannot perform themselves, such as securing open doors or towing stalled cars. The need for these services was highlighted recently when a major power outage in San Francisco left many Waymo vehicles stranded, forcing the company to suspend operations and update its software for better handling of infrastructure failures.
